Melusine: Birds of Many Feathers by Geraldine V. Oades-Sese Ph.D. introduces Melusine, who hears a strange bird call that sends her on a quest to find the bird responsible. Along the way, she hears other sounds, thinking that it might be her mystery bird, only to find that it is a different type altogether. As she continues along, she discovers birds that she knows, and some that she doesn’t. Not only did each bird make a different sound, but they also came in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. This only makes her even more curious about the bird she’s searching for. With all of the different sounds she hears, how will Melusine ever find her mysterious bird?

We had the good fortune of connecting with Geraldine Oades-Sese, Ph.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Geraldine, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Working for myself has been one of the best decisions I ever made, but it was only the first step toward success. The real secret to my achievements has been my unwavering passion for what I do. I truly believe that when we love what we do, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. For me, that passion has always been about helping children find happiness, realize their potential, and connect with nature through birding.

I poured my heart and soul into my work, dedicating myself to each project with 500% of my energy. That meant creating something that aligned with my passions and beliefs, something that mattered. That’s why I decided to combine my expertise as a child psychologist with my love for birding and photography. And that’s how Melusine: Birds of Many Feathers was born . . .

Mindful Birding & the Need for Collective Awakening

By Geraldine V. Oades-Sese, Ph.D.

As I stepped out of the car at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, the sweet buzzing of hummingbirds greeted me at the entrance. Visiting from the East Coast, I don”t see them much, so it was an amazing experience. Breathing as quietly as possible, I took mental note of the faint sounds of 3 to 4 hummingbirds busily feeding on feeders, in hopes of never forgetting them. Then, to my surprise, a bright flash of iridescent magenta glistening against the sun froze me in place as one approached! It hovered near my purple silk scarf, curious to see what I had to offer. Time stood still as I imagined its wings flitting a thousand times each second . . .
